Optimistic Femininity
A New Retail Concept Inspired
by the Kate Spade SS19 Collection
In her second collection for Kate Spade New York, which launched in Summer 2019, Creative Director Nicola Glass refined the house codes she had introduced the previous season, staying true to the brand’s core DNA while reinforcing its promise of Optimistic Femininity. She balanced delicate and bold styles, using innovative fabrications, thoughtful finishes, and fluid silhouettes to elevate each category. The brand’s iconic spade motif remained a central design element, integrated into patterns, cutouts, and hardware. The collection embraced an eclectic approach to color, with fresh takes on color-blocking and signature graphic prints, while later-season additions like summer suede and deep berry tones provided a seamless transition into fall.
As I developed a new retail concept for Kate Spade, this collection became a key source of inspiration. The balance of bold and delicate, structured and fluid informed a store design that encouraged layering, discovery, and playful styling—just as the collection invited mix-and-match expression. By weaving in elements of optimism, novelty, and timeless femininity, I ensured the retail experience reflected the same harmony of heritage and modernity that defined Nicola’s vision for the brand.
